Choosing Large Wall Art for Your Space
Getting the size right
When art hangs above furniture, a useful rule of thumb is to choose something around two-thirds the width of the piece below it. Over a 220cm sofa, that means art or a set measuring roughly 140 to 150cm across. Go much smaller and the art can look lost on the wall. Go wider than the furniture and the wall starts to feel crowded. Before you buy, measure the wall and the furniture, then mark the outline with painter's tape so you can see the size in place.
One piece, a pair or a set
A single large artwork gives you one clear focal point and suits most walls above a sofa, bed or sideboard. Pairs and sets of three spread the look across a wider wall, and they're easier to carry and hang than one oversized frame. Long, low pieces work well above a bedhead or a low sofa. Portrait pieces suit narrower walls where a landscape format wouldn't fit.
Hanging it well
As a guide, hang art so its centre sits around eye level, roughly 150cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave a gap of about 15 to 25cm so the art and the piece below read as one arrangement. Large framed pieces can be heavy, so use fixings suited to your wall type and the weight of the artwork, and ask someone to help you lift and level it.
Pulling the room together
Pick up one or two colours from the artwork in your cushions or rug so the piece feels connected to the rest of the room. For smaller walls, or to build a gallery wall around a larger piece, browse our prints and paintings. If you'd rather add light and depth than colour, a large wall mirror can do a similar job above a console or sideboard.
